The Most Romantic Ideas for a Beach Wedding

August 30, 2016

Is there anything more romantic than a beach wedding? For boho brides, a barefoot ceremony on the sand followed by a lantern-lit reception by the sea is the ultimate in wedding day perfection – and we’re inclined to agree! Whether you’re jetting off for a glamorous destination wedding or sticking to the shores of good old Blighty, here are some of our favourite romantic beach wedding ideas to keep you inspired…

Romantic lighting

One of the best things about getting married outside is that you have plenty of lighting options. For a beach ceremony, why not line your aisle with wooden or glass lanterns for beautiful glowing lights that are safe from the breeze? You could also try paper bag lights (which are specially designed to avoid any fire safety mishaps!), Tiki torches or tea lights.

If your reception area is outdoors too, then you have even more options for romantic lighting. Have your venue hang paper lanterns or strings of festoon lights, and wind fairy lights around nearby palm trees. Pop some tea lights in hurricane vases or mason jars for soft centrepiece lighting, and finally gather your guests for a sky lantern release at the end of the night (if your venue allows this, of course).

Seaside decor

A seaside setting is perfect for nature-lovers, as there are just so many natural décor options that can easily be incorporated into a romantic beach wedding. Natural driftwood can make for ideal centrepieces (just add a couple of scattered flowers, tea lights and seashells!), or for a beautiful ceremony arch draped with foliage or sheer fabric in your wedding colours. If you can find a piece that’s suitable, you could even have guests sign it for an alternative take on the guestbook.

Seashells, sand dollars and starfish are also beautiful natural additions to any beach wedding décor. Instead of flowers, why not create your own mermaid-style shell bouquet to carry down the aisle? Starfish or shells can make sweet buttonholes for your groom and his ushers, and sand dollars can make adorable place names.

Photo opportunities

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of romantic photo opportunities when it comes to a beach wedding! Take advantage of the sand by writing your new married names, wedding date or a heart with your initials in it – or write ‘Thank you’ for a ready-made thank you card shot! Another clever photo idea is to put hand prints in the sand with your wedding rings on the fingers – definitely one for the album.

Head out with your photographer around sunset for some incredibly romantic shots of you and your new husband on the beach together. The light will reflect beautifully off the water, and you can even venture out into the sea if you’re brave enough! This is the perfect opportunity to stage a ‘trash-the-dress’ shoot if that’s your style, or just play it safe with some pretty barefoot shots in the shallows.
