Bridesmaids Dresses: Trends your Bridal Party will Adore

March 27, 2015

It’s a constant source of sadness to me that I’ve not been asked to be a bridesmaid at all in recent years. I did trail up the aisle a couple of times when I was younger in the traditional bridesmaid’s dress but now, oh how times have changed. Now, you and your super lucky maids have all kinds of gorgeous options for their outfits so here’s a little run down of the gowns your girls are going to love…

Bridesmaid dress ideas for every style

The trend for short dresses have become amazingly popular in recent years and it’s not at all difficult to see why. They’re fresh, they’re fun and they’re oh-so adaptable for post-wedding wearing. Maids in short dresses seem to draw even more attention to the bride if she’s wearing a longer gown (which might be worth keeping in mind!). High hemlines look so relaxed and so natural and I love that you can let your girls' own style shine through by letting them choose their own shoes to bring a bit of themselves to the outfit. Or, mix up the shades for even more interest and personality. Bravo bridesmaids.

I don't think you can ever really have enough sparkle and having your bridesmaids in metallic gowns is all kinds of fabulous. Whether you go for a mix of colours and styles for a chic vintage look or keep your girls in matching gowns for Hollywood worthy style, you bridal party will light up you; the bride. Which is just how it should be.

A tonal dress for bridesmaids is another look you’ll love. It’s varied and interesting and it will ensure that your maids will be wearing the shade that suits them best yet still shows off your colour scheme. The whole look works together incredibly well and brings real depth to your bridal party.

Oh, printed gowns, how I love thee! I’m so happy that we’re seeing more of this look because it’s so on trend and so feminine. It also gives you so many options to work the look to suit your theme. Big blowsy florals, sharp stripes and geometrics or pin point polka dots – opt for whatever you want and let your bridesmaids do the rest.

There is, of course, no rule saying that maids must wear dresses and I am head over heels for separates right now. Tulle skirts and soft cardigans or, bold blouses and statement necklaces, I swoon for them all. The key to this look is contrast – there needs to be a big difference between the top and bottom to really highlight the fact that there’s more to your maids than a single gown.

I think we can pretty much credit The Duchess of Cambridge for our renewed love of lace and there’s absolutely no reason why bridesmaids dresses shouldn’t get in on the action. Softly coloured lace gowns are wonderfully romantic and so amazingly flattering. A very good look indeed.

However if you’re looking for a bit of drama, embrace the backless bridal trend for your maids too. This is a guaranteed head-turner of a look and would make your girls the centre of attention if they make their way up the aisle before you. I think my ultimate option for bridesmaids is trousers – yes, I love a sharp suit or a beautiful wide leg because when it comes to weddings, there are just a million things to fall in love with.
