Vintage travel is a really wonderful theme for your wedding. It’s all about the golden era of exploration and excitement. A time when doing something we take for granted now was a huge undertaking. Travel in years gone by was special, iconic journeys were once-in-a-lifetime experiences so all in all, it’s a pretty perfect metaphor for a wedding don’t you agree?
Of course nowadays, we all travel. We jet off to capital cities for a few days and fly around the world for holidays. Whilst travel might have lost some of the golden glow, it’s still something that you remember forever. If you’ve travelled with your partner, you’ll have made memories that are an integral part of you as a couple so why not celebrate this at your wedding?
A vintage travel theme can work in any venue and almost with any colour scheme. Go for natural hues if your day is going to have a rustic vibe or bright colours inspired by iconic travel posters for a more contemporary look. The choice is absolutely yours.
When it comes to your invitations and day-of stationery, luggage labels, tickets, airmail designs and maps are all incredibly popular. You can personalise things by including locations that you’ve visited or are special to you and. How about making confetti with a heart shaped hole punch and lots of maps or a table plan that tells guests ‘where in the world’ they’re sitting. Luggage labels make great place cards and a ticket wallet full of information promises an adventure that involve hours of queues or delays!

Globes are also a must-have for a vintage travel theme wedding. I love the idea of using them as part of table centres (stacked up on piles of old travel guides with vintage postcards, holiday accessories and flowers) or even as hanging lanterns with each globe around a bulb or two on a string of fairy lights. However, my favourite idea has to be using a globe as a guest book and allowing guests to create something that will no doubt find space in your home for years to come.
However, the ultimate decoration for this theme has to be as many vintage cases and trunks as you can find. I suggest scouring antique markets; boot sales and online auctions and snapping up as many as possible because you can use them in so many ways for your wedding.
A pile of cases with flowers and details make a great ceremony or reception focal point. A case that’s full of old travel postcards makes another great guest book or it’s just a brilliant place for guests to leave cards and gifts. String luggage labels across an open case for a quirky table plan or use smaller cases as cake stands or as a container for favours, photobooth props or confetti. A quick look on Pinterest for ‘suitcase wedding’ will give you more ideas than you could ever use!
