Vibrant colours, iconic styling and options aplenty – you’ll be overflowing with ideas before you can say ‘beehive’.

Every age has its own signature style and there’s no doubting the fact that, for the 1960s, this was the mini skirt. So, a shorter length gown is absolutely ideal for a swinging sixties wedding. Higher, rounder necklines are perfect for this look and sleeves are also spot on. Team with cute peep toes shoes, a boxy bridal handbag and a big bouffant! You’ve also got a great choice of accessories – a wide white Alice band and short veil, an oversize hair bow or a floral inspired bridal side tiara such as Glitzy Secrets’ sixties inspired Sweet Daisy Side Tiara would all look fabulous. Don’t forget the evocative black eye liner!
Bridesmaids can certainly go as short as they dare with their dresses and white tights would be a great option in winter. If your bridesmaids (or yourself!), have shorter hair then channel Twiggy, embrace your gamine crop and accessorise with a suitably stylish hairpiece. Let the guys decide whether they’re more Mod or Rocker and dress accordingly – a sharp suited groom arriving on a scooter would be the best start to a 1960s wedding ever!
A 1960s wedding isn’t the place for pastels and pale tones. Instead, choose a bright, vivid colour and really go to town. I have to say that I’m really rather taken with yellow and it was certainly a feature of the sixties palette. Sunflowers, ranunculus, dahlias and other big blowsy blooms in sunny hues would look amazing in bouquets, tablecentres and other floral decorations.

Carry the yellow through the day with bold graphic stationery, colourful patterned fabrics and eye-catching details. The circle motif certainly works really well with the 1960s vibe so use this far and wide from big balloons to cake designs. Large, bright paper lanterns look great when hung from ceilings or use giant paper honeycomb balls in your signature colours to line the aisle, suspend above tables or just to pile in corners.
You might also like to go on a hunt for some authentic 1960s props to bring a real touch of the decade to your wedding. It’s still relatively easy to find things from the era that you can incorporate in your day. For example, vinyl records from the period make excellent decorations, retro suitcases (again in bright colours!) are perfect receptacles for cards and gifts and even larger pieces of furniture would make unforgettable cake tables or drink stations. Also, keep your eyes open for period typewriters, telephones or records players as they’ll make brilliant features.
If you’re determined to stick to the sixties, then you might like to think about onion dips, beef bourguignon and fondues for food or go for cocktails such as Martinis, Brandy Alexanders or even a brightly coloured Blue Hawaiian. Just make sure there’s plenty on offer to revive your guests before the evening celebrations start – a night of dancing to The Beatles under glitterballs awaits!
