New Year's Eve is one of the best times of year to go all out with your makeup. Whether you're hitting the town for a fabulous party or just having a few drinks in with friends, no look is too glamorous when it comes to ringing in the new year. We've rounded up some of our favourite beauty looks to try this year...

Glitter and the festive season go hand in hand, so there's no better time to try your hand at a bit of sparkle! Silver, gold and black are your best friends for a glam NYE look – we loved Chanel's take on silver under eye glitter paired with sleek winger eyeliner, and you can easily replicate it with a sparkly gel liner for a true disco ball effect. If you prefer to keep your bottom lashes bare, pack sparkles on your top lid using a mixing medium or glitter glue and cosmetic grade glitter (don't use any old glitter, as this can damage your eyes!). For a modern take on the look, use a chunkier cut in dark colours, or try gold leaf-style foil eyeshadows for a luxe finish.

There's no doubt that 2015 has been all about the vampy lip, and we're loving burgundy and berry shades for a sexy New Year makeup look. It may be a statement shade, but a dark red lip can be surprisingly versatile! You can switch up your look depending on what finish you choose, from velvet matte to super glossy or a sheer stain. Whichever you choose, we recommend using a lip liner to give you a more precise result – if you can't find one that matches your lipstick exactly, use a nude or transparent liner instead. Our favourite eye makeup looks to wear with a dark lip are a chic eyeliner flick, bare lids with lashings of mascara or a full-on shimmery gold eye with false lashes – if you can't go all out at New Year, when can you?!

If you want a more fashion-forward take on the festive sparkle of glitter, then washes of metallic colour are going to be your best friend this December 31st! This year has since a huge surge in rose gold and copper shades, so it's no surprise to find them in our makeup as well. Choose a cream shadow (they're more easily blended) and use a synthetic brush to buff all over the lid for a sheer, shimmery effect. If you want a shiny block of bronze, use your finger to press the colour into your lid for a more opaque shadow. You don't have to go for copper – this looks amazing with silvers and platinums, olive green and gold, and deeper plum and navy tones.

You can't beat a smoky eye – it's the old faithful of the makeup world, and we're more than happy to break it out for a New Year's Eve bash. Since Urban Decay's Naked palettes became a staple in every makeup lover's stash, smoky eyes have definitely taken a more shimmery, neutral turn, which makes them great for the party season. Chocolate brown shades look gorgeous with bronzed skin and caramel nude lip colours, while charcoal and matte black shadows look chic paired with a pale or soft pink lip. Don't forget to add a pop of shimmer in the corner of your eye to open them up, and add lashes for the full glamorous effect.
