Alice in Wonderland: Bookish Inspiration for a Literature Lover’s Wedding

October 09, 2014

Booktrust’s annual children’s book week usually starts us reminiscing about our favourite novels. Often, it starts the obvious questions at GS HQ “what was the first book you remember reading?”, “who was your favourite author?” but today the conversation ventured into weddings (as it usually does) and the following question was asked; “which of your favourite childhood tales would make the best big day theme?”. Now this got me thinking…

I have to confess the book I’ve chosen isn’t necessarily one of my favourites but, without doubt, it gives immense opportunity for a creating a wonderful and utterly magical wedding theme of quirky, delightful escapism. I may also be swayed by quotes from this book which are nothing short heart-melting and should be in every Starting Married Life manual. How could you not love "Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures" and "He was part of my dream but then I was part of his dream too"?

So can you guess which book I've chosen? Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland of course!

An Alice-Worthy Wonderland Wedding

So an Alice style dress may not be the choice of every bride but, with designers such as Ian Stuart featuring pale blue wedding dresses in their collections, a classic look with a slight nod towards the character can be achieved. If you’d prefer to keep your gown out of your theme, why not let your bridesmaids rock the Alice look with blue cinched waist, full skirt dresses? Accessorise with a bow bridal headband and see your fairy-tale come to life.

Alice in Wonderland Wedding Theme Ideas

The planning and preparation is where you can really have fun with the details. Excite your guests with a preview of your wedding theme with ‘Read Me’ labelled invitations and hand out heart shaped confetti for your guests to throw. Opt for cute wedding favours of ‘Drink Me’ bottles filled with champagne or a cocktail as a token to remember your special day by and let children delight in your theme by giving them a little white rabbit cuddly toy.

An Alice in Wonderland wedding theme wouldn’t be complete without a tea party and your tables are the perfect opportunity to create a striking display. Go for hanging teacups filled with flowers as a quirky centrepiece, scatter candle filled cups and saucers to create a romantic ambience or create displays with cups set on a stack of vintage books (Alice of Wonderland, of course!). Use keys labelled with your guests name and their table number as an alternative seating plan and number your tables with miniature door handle displays so your guests can find the table to match their key.

Every Alice inspired wedding demands a looking glass or two and, with mirrors so affective in enhancing the grandeur of a wedding, they can be used effectively to accentuate your theme. Stand a display of flowers and old clocks on a mirrored surface and the reflection will give the illusion of a much more dramatic arrangement or place a statement mirror behind the top table. Add signs, frame, playing cards and hats into the mix and I think it’s safe to say your wedding theme will be a talking point for many years.
