If you’re looking for a wedding theme that’s super glamorous and includes vintage touches, literary flourishes and plenty of excuses to indulge, then The Great Gatsby has to be the theme for you. Our love of 1920s Art Deco knows no bounds and Gatsby inspired weddings are, quite rightly, incredibly popular. Today, I’m sharing some of my favourite on-theme edibles with you so, without further ado, here are fifteen fabulous Gatsby wedding cakes…
When it comes to choosing your cake for a Gatsby wedding, the sky really is the limit. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel paints a picture of a decadent era and the Roaring Twenties certainly were that. A Gatsby theme wedding is luxurious, opulent and undeniably eye-catching and your cake needs to be all of those things too!

The shape of the cake itself makes a big difference. If you’re looking for a more historically accurate feel, then square layers are the way to go because Art Deco loves geometric forms. Circular tiers give a softer, more modern look and both shapes can work perfectly, it’s up to you which style suits your wedding day best.
A two or three tier cake is a must-have at a Gatsby wedding because when everything’s about luxury, you really need the wow-factor! A multi-layered cake (especially one that’s fully covered by icing) gives you the opportunity to mix and match flavour combinations so do talk to your cake maker to find out what’s available. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you having more than four tiers – Jay Gatsby himself would love the luxury!

To really work the Gatsby theme, keep your colour combinations simple for maximum effect. White icing is a classic base onto which you can add touches of gold, green (a nod to jade that was so popular during the 1920s) or black but if you’re feeling daring, why not use more colour with white as the contrast?
Art Deco shapes and patterns are, of course, the ideal decorations for your cake. I love the bold and angular fans and flourishes that immediately give that Jazz Age feel. In terms of other embellishments, jewels and jewellery make perfect cake adornments with pearls and sparkles being ever popular but you could also include feathers or flowers for that softer touch.
Above all, a wedding cake needs to taste fantastic so as appealing as it might like on the outside, make sure that what’s on the inside is equally as memorable!
